The Toronto Zoo Robert and I visited the Toronto Zoo on Sunday. The zoo proved to be a very enriching experience. The animals all had what seemed to be comfortable cages. If they were outdoors, they had grass. If they were indoors they had a full spectrum of habitats. There were many buildings that housed rainforests, jungles, and other types of habitats for various animals. The amazing thing is that in these habitats, most of the animals were free. The birds moved around as they wished. Monkeys climbed up and down trees. Butterflies nestled on leaves. Chipmunks searched the floor for food. The only animals that were not loose were ones that could be harmful to humans, such as baboons and orangutans. Outside, most of the animals had nice, well kept, habitats. The hippos had several large ponds and a large grass and sand area to roam around in. The zebra had a grassy field about two acres in size. In all, every animal had habitat that was sufficient to keep them happy, even though they were caged. The Toronto Zoo is very well managed, and should serve as an example for zoos everywhere. The Toronto Zoo differed so dramatically from the Washington D.C Zoo that they couldnt be compared. All I can say is that if there is any zoo I would like to work in, it is right there in Toronto.
